Be who you want to be

Who are you? If you had to choose three words to describe yourself (without being too harsh) what would they be? Be honest and write them down.

Now think of someone you know who appears to have everything going for them. Maybe someone you admire. Write down three words to describe them.

Now look at the two lists of words and compare them. Which set of words would you rather use to describe yourself? Maybe neither.

Now think of and write down three words to describe the person you would like to be. Give this a bit of thought. Ask yourself why you would like to be the person you described.

Did you know that many people have a public face? A face for the outside world to see. Of course you knew that; chances are that you put on your public face now and again.

But the main point here is that you’re deciding when to put on that public face. How do you feel when you put on your public face and pretend all’s well?

For a length of time you feel better. You chat, laugh, listen and enter into a sociable occasion because that’s how you want to be seen—hence it’s your public face, the one people see.

Even if you only lift yourself up a fraction, even if it’s only for a short space of time, you’ve given yourself a break. Why do these breaks have to be for other people? Why can’t you give yourself a break now and again?

What small steps could you take to becoming the new you? Look at the positive people around you, and take a leaf from their book. Become an actor/ actress for a while and see how it feels. If you’re laughing or mocking me at this point, brilliant! I have a reaction. Go for it! You will feel better and that is what life is all about; being the person you want to be.

Don’t make excuses before you try something new. You’re reading this to make changes; take a step forward and do a bit of acting. If nothing else it will lift your spirits, and if you lift your spirits, you’re heading in the right direction.
